We live in a rented apartment, so we don’t have a dog, but I would love to have one in the future. First of all, I don’t recommend getting a puppy and a baby at the same time, but if parents want a dog for the children to grow up with when they are little bit older, then I see no problem.
Children can benefit greatly from having a canine companion. They can learn responsibility and compassion, and how to interact with animals, but they need to be taught to interact safely with dogs.
There is no one best breed for children. It depends on your family and what suits your style. But, there are some breeds that are consider to be the best dogs for small children.
Best Dogs For Small Children
1. Labrador Retrievers
Retrievers make great family dogs and they are first choice for lots of families! Who wouldn’t like them when they are this amazing.
2. Golden Retrievers
The Golden Retriever is one of the more popular dogs for families. They make an excellent pets!
3. Newfoundlands
They are great with children, so if you don’t mind a very large dog, a Newfie is a great choice.
4. Irish Wolfhounds
They are gentle giants, but have in mind that they have a shorter life expectancy than smaller dogs.
5. German Shepherds
They are good family dogs, but have in mind that they are very protective.

6. The Havanese
This is a great smaller dog that is sturdier than most small dogs and has a friendly disposition.

Beagles are family-friendly and so cute. I have to admit that they are one of my favorite dogs for small children. They were originally kept as hunting dogs, but now fit well in homes with active children, as they are sturdily built and never too tired to play.
8. Bulldogs
Bulldogs are very even-tempered dogs and because of that they are perfect dogs for small children. They are ideal family dogs and a wonderful children’s pet. But, it won’t win any awards for “most energetic dog.”
9. Collies
Lassie is a very gentle and predictable breed. It’s easily trainable, so it is perfect for families that didn’t have dogs before.
10. Boxer
They’re the sweetest, most loyal dog breed, and definitely have the energy and patience to put up with kids. Train your boxer not to jump on people and you will have no problem. They’re extremely gentle and lovable.
Take a close look at the specifics on each of these breeds, and decide what type dog you prefer. You need to have in mind lots of things: exercise and grooming requirements, shedding, size, personality, etc.
Honestly, I prefer mixed breed, so my first recommendation is to check out your local animal shelter – where you’ll find lots of wonderful mixed breed, as well as purebred dogs. You can even go for an adult dog. Older dog probably already have experience with children. With adult dog you will know the dog’s personality and be able to skip the house training, and all other puppy issues.
