Starting My Own Balcony Garden

I absolutely love having fresh herbs to cook with. Well, who doesn’t? Typically, I buy them in the store, but I decided to try to grow them myself.

My plan was to start a balcony garden with some smaller herbs, the ones that I use a lot, like oregano and chive. If they manage to survive, I will continue with other herbs, but also some bigger plants like cherry tomatoes.

What did I use for my balcony garden

Well, I didn’t really want to buy any containers for this. I just wanted to have something more economical for this herb balcony garden. That is why I decided to use empty yogurt cups. Isn’t it great when you can upcycle something you would throw away and it turns out really cute in the end? I definitely encourage everyone not to throw away yogurt cups because you can use them for so many things. You can find ideas on Pinterest.

So, you will just need:
empty yogurt cups
potting mix
herb seeds
anything you have at home for decorations – for example, I used sparkly tape.

First you have to wash and dry your empty yogurt cups. When they are completely dry – decorate them. Use your imagination, you can do whatever you want.

Add a dirt in the yogurt cups. Place seeds at the top and add little bit more of dirt. After you are finished with all of your seed planting, be sure to water them.

Well, I won’t tell you have to take care of them, because I am still not sure will it work. We’ll see in couple of months. I have to admit that Iā€™m really loving how these turned out and I really hope I will soon have some tasty herbs. If you don’t have time, you could easily grow your own herbs from a ready plants.

If this balcony garden doesn’t work out, I will try with starter plants! I will keep you updated!

  3. We grow a ton of fresh herbs and vegetables in our backyard garden, and a bunch of them started from little cup containers from seed, just like yours. Ours are doing SO well – I’m actually surprised at how well they are doing — and I hope yours turn out just as great!

  6. What a great idea! I bet it will work out. Herbs are resilient! Except when they aren’t.. So.. I have no idea what I’m talking about, except dill seems to flourish where basil never works for me. Cilantro also does a great job of not dying. šŸ˜€
