Creating New Family Tradition: Writing Letters for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is coming, and with that comes special time when dads and kids are scrambling around trying to get you that special present. But, why don’t you give yourself and your family a present this year? I decided to turn things around this year, and create a new family tradition. We will celebrate the love and care that mothers and maternal figures bring into our lives by writing heartfelt letters. This tradition can involve children writing letters to their moms and moms writing letters to their mother figures. I will even write the letter to my friends telling them how great mothers they are. Here’s how you can also start this beautiful tradition in your family:

Why Write Letters?

  • Express Love and Gratitude: Letters allow us to put our feelings into words that can last for a lifetime. It allows you to express gratitude for everything our mothers and maternal figures do for us.
  • Create Lasting Memories: Handwritten letters can be treasured keepsakes, providing a tangible reminder of your love for one another.
  • Deepen Relationships: Writing letters encourages reflection and thoughtfulness, helping to strengthen bonds between family members.
  • Share Stories and Memories: Letters provide an opportunity to share personal stories and cherished memories, fostering a deeper connection. These letters can become family heirloom that will be passed down through generations.

How to Get Started:

  1. Set Aside Time: Choose a quiet time leading up to Mother’s Day to sit down with your children and discuss the importance of writing letters. Explain the tradition and encourage them to think about what they want to say.
  2. Choose Paper and Pen: Provide special stationery or cards for the letters to make the experience more memorable. It comes as no suprise that Emily chose a unicorn themed stationery. You can also let kids decorate their letters with drawings or stickers to add a personal touch.
  3. Encourage Reflection: Guide your children to think about what they appreciate most about their mom and what makes her special. Help them reflect on favorite memories or moments they’ve shared. We will go through our photo album for previous year and remember all the good times we had.
  4. Write from the Heart: Encourage your children to write sincerely and from the heart. They can express their love, gratitude, and admiration for their mom.
  5. Mom Writes a Letter: Lead by the example. Moms should also take part in this tradition by writing a letter to their mother figure. Whether it’s their own mom, grandmother, aunt, or mentor, this is an opportunity to express love and appreciation. As I mentioned, I will also write the letter to my friends telling them they are great mothers and include memories of all the times they showed it.
  6. Share and Celebrate: On Mother’s Day, gather as a family and take turns reading your letters aloud. This can be a touching and intimate moment, filled with laughter and tears of joy. Check with your kids first if they are OK with letters being read out loud or would they prefer to make it private.
  7. Keep the Letters: Create a special box or album to store the letters for future. You can reread them during those times when the kiddos are driving you crazy and you are struggling to remember the good times.

Ideas for What to Include in the Letters:

  • Gratitude: Thank your mom or mother figure for the love and care she provides.
  • Favorite Memories: Share special moments that have brought joy and happiness.
  • Words of Encouragement: Offer support and kind words that will uplift and inspire.
  • Future Plans: Share your hopes and dreams for the future and how you see your relationship growing.

Writing letters for Mother’s Day can become a meaningful tradition that celebrates the special bond between mothers and their children, as well as between moms and their own mother figures and their tribe. It’s a beautiful opportunity to create lasting memories and deepen your relationships. Start this heartfelt tradition this year and watch it become a cherished part of your family’s Mother’s Day celebrations for years to come.
