Chores for Children – Age appropriate list

Here comes the question about chores for children that many of us ask ourselves and our friends with children:

In our family, the answer is definitely YES.

We believe that doing chores gives kids some sense of achievement and independence. I know how my daughter was very proud when she started doing chores. She was so happy she learned a new skill and I could see that it helped to improve her self-esteem tremendously. Doing chores also gave her a sense of value within the family. I trusted her to take care of those tasks, and she started perceiving herself as competent and relied on.

So, we do believe in chores for children, but what we don’t believe is – paying them for chores. We don’t want the chores to become just a way to get some extra money. That is not really the point, isn’t it? The kids would also learn responsibility this way, but not for the right reasons.

So, if you’re ready to start giving some chores for children, you can start as early as age 2. The chores should always be tailored to their age and current abilities. When they are 2, they can easily wipe down the front of the fridge or doors with a wet washcloth, or pick up their toys. They can help you folding washcloths. When they get a bit older, they can fold towels. Also, cleaning their room should definitely be their job, and they can start by helping you as early as age 3 or 4.

I found a great photo below that I followed with my daughter, so feel free to check it out and find the best chores for children, age appropriate.

  1. This is a great list. My kids work harder than any of their friends, but it makes me feel good to know that they’ll go to college knowing how to cook, clean, and take care of themselves (and their laundry!)
